The screen is landscape oriented, the printed paper is portrait oriented. The display is designed to be dynamic in the way information is viewed which can't be transferred to paper.

Mousing over an icon or highlighted text will show a panel with related details. So you can read all the information in the document without scrolling or having to click on a new heading. Just point at the item.
NB some information is only visible while the mouse is over the icon, others remain in view until another item is selected (mouse pointed to it).

If there is more information on another document, it will also have an arrow icon () to show that a new document will be loaded.

The ZonePad will make it so that you don't have to point.

How the Zoneguide icon is used
The Zoneguide is used to identify where to press.
The 'zonekey' to press is indicated on the Zoneguide.
The full Zoneguide is unnecessary. It takes too much space to display

Using the basic Zoneguide icons
If you see this icon, it can only be from the middle left of the Zoneguide. Within that section there are 6 zonekeys.
The black mark shows where to press within the section. (top left)
This can be reduced to so that it can be same size as the line of text.

Using the Arrow Zoneguide icons
This icon indicates the left middle sector of the Zoneguide.
Within that section there are 6 zonekeys.
The black mark shows where to press within the section. (top left)
This icon is reduced to and is the same size as the line of text
The Zoneguide

The Zonepad layout:    the Zoneguide:   or:

  or
The zonepad has the Zoneguide marked on it. Using the Zoneguide all the zonekeys can be identified by placing a marker on the Zoneguide in the relative position. To find where to press: either look at the zonepad, or use the embossing to feel the position of the Zoneguide and hence where to press.

The whole Zoneguide is not necessary. By using one of nine Zoneguide icons, all the zonekeys can be positioned relative to the zoneguide. These icons can be large, or small enough to fit on a line without affecting its height.

Use either the basic or arrow zoneguide icons to identify each sector.
The Zonepage zonekeys

These are the zonekeys within the green square. They are the zonekeys with which the Zoneguide icons will be most used.

Where there is a list to chose from they will normally be listed vertically down the columns of zonekeys and then from left to right. (as shown in the contents on the left)

When used as links, they will use a small icon next to the linking text and may be any of the zonekeys from the Zonepad

When the zonekeys are used for cursor control or targeting, the icons are not used, except for the action zonekeys as necessary.

For text entry and navigation, the whole zonepad can be displayed with icons showing the actions or characters within the zonepad in their relative positions.

The Actionkeys

or
The eight Actionkeys are the left and right outer columns within the green rectangle. They include such actions as Delete and Enter but will vary depending on the application being run.

Very often actionkeys use graphical icons which may be displayed as an icon shown within the zonepad (ie the whole zonepad is shown therefore the Zoneguide icons are unnecessary).

Sometimes they will be icons on their own, in which case the Zoneguide icon will also be needed to identify where to press.

or

Options and Function 'keys'
These are normally part of the zonepage 'keys', perhaps using the top or bottom rows or both. (eg home multimedia control)
The Systemkeys and Functionkeys

The Systemkeys and Functionkeys are fixed.

There are 3 System 'keys' (Escape, System Options and Help). They should not need to be displayed at any time but they can be identified in a similar way to the Actionkeys by showing the zonekey outside the rectangle and square. or
The Functionkeys may be use to perform functions such as save documents or change application or be used as a Page Select zonekeys. These may be identified in a similar way to the Systemkeys or by using a square with a number inside it or each having its own icon.

Page Select zonekeys are used when a different zonepage has to be selected before pressing one of the zonekey. The Page select zonekey may be part of a zonepage, or an Actionkey but normally it will be a function zonekey or use the Zonepage Modifier zonekeys.

Zonepage Modifier zonekeys

The 'shift keys' that change the actions of the zonepages.
There are 8 modifier or page select zonekey laid out in the form of a compass rose- vertical, horizontal and diagonal. This gives 9 possible zonepages available at any one time (over 450 'keys').

It may be displayed as two icons, the first is the modifier zonekey (pageselect) the second is the zonepage zonekey:

Or as a single icon to identify the zonepage name : eg     Navigation
The Page Select zonekeys are used when a different zonepage has to be selected before pressing one of the zonekeys.
The modifier zonekeys are identified using arrow icons showing the direction from the centre of the zonepage modifier.

There are two ways the page select may be used. Either it is active only while being pressed or it sets the zonepage which remains until another zonepage is selected. In this case the centre position may be used to select the default zonepage (ie no zonepage selected).

Other layouts

Since the zonepad may be used in the 'portrait' or 'landscape' orientation, the icon may have a marker added to confirm which it is (eg a triangle in the top right corner or a green bar on the side nearest the bottom when seen in landscape).

The icons design may vary, particularly when it has to be small. It can be abbreviated to anything that can uniquely identify the nine sectors of the Zoneguide and/or the action zonekey areas. The basic Zoneguide icons are minimalist representations of the Zoneguide. Alternatively the arrow Zoneguide icons show the direction from the centre to the sector where the zonekey is. The position of the 'zonekey' within the sector is shown by its position within the icon, either in a corner, middle side or the centre.

The zonepad has a basic layout of 7 by 7 for the main zonepage square, with 4 actionkeys on each side. In situations where more zonekeys are needed this could be changed to a basic layout of 9 by 9, with perhaps 5 actionkeys on each side. The Zoneguide icon design used is still valid except the outer icons would have to be able to show the positions of nine zonekeys (3x3) as opposed to 6 zonekeys (3x2) or 4 zonekeys (2x2)
